Body

The African penguin, also known as the Cape penguin or South African penguin, has a distinct and streamlined body adapted for marine life. It is a medium-sized penguin, typically 60-70 cm (24-28 inches) tall, weighing between 2.2 and 3.5 kg (4.9–7.7 lbs). These penguins are characterized by their black and white coloring, designed for camouflage: a black back and white belly with a unique pattern of black spots that vary between individuals. They also feature distinctive pink patches of skin above their eyes, which help regulate their body temperature by increasing blood flow and turning pinker as they get warmer. The African penguin has stiff, flattened wings that function as flippers for swimming. This species is adapted for a life predominantly spent in the water, diving to catch fish and squid, their primary diet. Despite their adaptability and robust nature, African penguins face significant threats that have led to their classification as an endangered species.
